FACULTY Teachers are chosen who are practicing Catholics professing an unswerving loyalty to all the teachings of the Church. Each publicly makes a Profession of Faith and takes an Oath of Fidelity in the presence of the entire student body. Teachers must meet established criteria to clearly indicate one’s harmony with the academic philosophy as well as the Academy’s philosophy regarding the formation of children. It is the
thinking of many respected educators that teaching is a gift – a gift to be
nurtured. Not all – even those who may
be “certified” or have advanced degrees – are called to this vocation. Although it is the norm of the Academy to
seek those who are certified, much more important is the educational
background that has led to such certification. The preparation for this noble
undertaking differs in colleges of education and some practices may not be
compatible with the educational philosophy embraced at Historically,
ADMINISTRATION Mr. Joseph M. Norton, M.A., is the
Headmaster of the Academy and also serves as Principal of the elementary
grades. Mr. Norton has nearly thirty
years of experience in Catholic education, including twenty years as
Headmaster of Holy Angels. He received
his B.S. and his teacher certification from Mrs. Marilyn G. Malone, M.A., is the
Principal of the high school grades.
Mrs. Malone has over thirty-five years of experience in Catholic
education. She received her B.A. in
English with secondary teaching certification from the It should be noted that teachers and staff, whether religious or lay, willingly receive lower salaries than the norm for their experience and credentials. This sacrificial cooperation is a sign of their apostolic zeal for what they see as a vocation. RELIGION
CURRICULUM “God made us to know Him, love Him and serve Him in this world so we can be happy with Him in the next.” These simple but profound words from our catechism are the basis for religious instruction in the Catholic Faith. We cannot love what we do not know and we will not serve One whom we do not love. The chief truths taught by Jesus Christ through the Catholic Church are found in the Apostle’s Creed and it is through Christ and His Church that our students learn to know, love, and serve God. Catechetical instruction at all grade levels is in harmony with the Catechism of the Catholic Church with all instructors professing a loyalty to the Magisterial teachings of the Church. Catholic doctrine, scripture and the lives of the saints serve to lay a foundation at the elementary level. Memorization of the Commandments, Sacraments, Beatitudes and the Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy give children a knowledge of their Catholic faith on which to build and guidelines for living a life befitting a Christian.
ACADEMIC
CURRICULUM The Academy provides a challenging
curriculum that is rooted in the classical approach. An appreciation for what is true, good,
beautiful and noble permeates studies at all grade levels. The basics of
reading, writing and mathematics are at the core of the elementary
program. Phonics is a vital component
in the development of reading skills.
Latin is introduced in the primary grades. An emphasis on correct English grammar is
essential in the development of strong writing and speaking skills. Memorization of math facts gives the
student the necessary foundation upon which to build. The high school grades provide a strong liberal arts education in preparation for college. Further development of rhetoric, grammar and logic prepares the students to reason well and think logically. Latin, the root of the romance languages, is normally a requirement. An in-depth study of the contributions of Western Civilization and of our beloved country is at the core of history lessons. The sciences are presented with the premise that God has created an orderly world and that man’s obligation with experimentation and discovery is to always respect the plan of the Creator. Textbook selection at all grades is governed by a test of compatibility with the mission and philosophy of Holy Angels. Scrutiny is exercised to assure that material is presented in an objective manner and to avoid the adoption of texts which promote a particular political agenda or are deficient in providing what is significant information. Older texts which are out of print but are the best choice for compatibility are retained and respected as a significant contribution. In summation, the academic methodology and content are grounded in the basics of traditional education and the pursuit of truth. The latest in educational contributions which are in harmony with the Academy’s educational philosophy are given serious consideration. It has been said that at Holy Angels “the best of the old meets the best of the new.” |
